A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Ministry of Ayush and the India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) of the Ministry of Tourism outlines how the two parties would cooperate to promote medical tourism that adheres to Ayurveda and other conventional medical systems. According to the MoU, the Ministry of Ayush would train ITDC officials for the same.
The Ministry of Ayush will periodically give ITDC all the technical know-how needed to develop medical value travel using Ayurveda and other conventional medical systems and select tourism circuits where there is a great deal of potential.
On the recommendation of the Ministry of Ayush, ITDC would include historical landmarks of Indian medical systems to tourist destinations under the category of "Knowledge Tourism" and may produce travel-related movies or books. It would consider setting up Ayurveda and Yoga centres at the hotels managed by ITDC and will collaborate to host courses on sensitization.
A Joint Working Group (JWG), which will be co-chaired by officials from the MoA and ITDC, will keep track of the MoU′s implementation and advancement. The JWG will also determine the best strategies used by Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and other countries to market themselves as a top destination for medical value tourism, according to the release.
In the recently concluded First Health Working Group meeting of the G20 India presidency in Thiruvananthapuram, the delegates from Kerala discussed the prospects and difficulties for promoting medical value travel (MVT) in India.
In India, MVT has recently experienced tremendous growth. The Global Wellness Institute (GWI) released research titled "The Global Wellness Economy: Looking beyond COVID" that projects 9.9% annual growth for the industry. By 2025, the Ayush-based healthcare and wellness sector is anticipated to reach a value of 70 billion dollars.
